Motivational Determinants and Barriers to the Professional Activity of Psychologists in the Context of Contemporary Challenges
Abstract
The article examines motivational determinants of psychologists’ professional activity in the context of contemporary social and professional challenges. The relevance of the study is determined by the growing demand for qualified psychological assistance and increasing requirements for the professional resilience of specialists whose work involves intensive emotional engagement and responsibility for the mental well-being of others. The structure of professional motivation of psychologists is analyzed, particularly the relationship between intrinsic and extrinsic motives as well as the role of prosocial orientation in ensuring the effectiveness of professional activity. The main barriers to professional activity are identified, including emotional exhaustion, routine work processes, insufficient organizational support, and limited opportunities for professional development. The study substantiates the importance of personal and professional resources that enable psychologists to maintain psychological stability, preserve the meaning of professional activity, and sustain ethical responsibility in helping relationships. Theoretical approaches to the study of the motivational sphere of psychologists are summarized and findings from contemporary research in this field are integrated. Strategies for supporting and developing professional motivation are outlined, including the development of reflective competence, strengthening professional identity, participation in supervision, and the internalization of helping values within professional practice. The results emphasize the importance of motivational stability of psychologists for improving the quality of psychological assistance and supporting the development of the mental health system in Ukraine.
